Connect with me on Facebook, Twitter and Google+BREEZY DAY: It won't be as windy as yesterday but the tight pressure gradient, or difference between the departing low pressure system to the east and cold, high pressure building into the region, will lead to a breezy day. This morning the wind is NW 15-20mph. With the temp in the 20s the wind chill is starting in the teens.Clouds will diminish into the afternoon, turning mostly sunny. Despit the sun, it'll stay about eight degrees below the average high, Lubbock's high near 48. Wind will only gradually back off this afternoon, to about 15-18mph by late afternoon. Here are the projected highs for the area today: CLEAR DAYS AHEAD: With the dry airmass and the wind diminishing tonight it'll get cold, low near 23 in Lubbock, some teens north and west of the city. The wind chill won't be as bad in the morning with lighter wind. It'll warm back to the 60s rest of this week into the weekend. A southwest breeze will help warm Friday to around 64. The average high is 56 this time of year. There may be a few weak fronts that try to edge into the area, there aren't any signs of cold weather here for the next week. There also aren't any big storm systems ahead, so we should stay with quiet, mild, mostly sunny to partly cloudy days into early to middle of next week. Have a great day! Rudy will have the next forecast update here later this afternoon.-Matt

Connect with me on Facebook, Twitter and Google+WINDY DAY: We've had some patchy dust the past few days but it's going to get even windier today, likely with a bit more dust. The wind is pretty light out of the west this morning, but it'll quickly ramp up late this morning into the afternoon W/SW 25-38mph with gusts of 45-50mph. The wind should be even stronger across our southwestern communities, including Hobbs, Seminole and Lamesa. If a few showers try to form today it'll be so dry that not more than a few sprinkles would reach the ground, but this would further enhance any wind gusts. Across our area isolated gusts to 60mph are possible. The Weather Service has posted a wind advisory for most of our area, shown below in orange. Stronger wind is expected in the yellow area, where a high wind warning is in place: It'll be about 20 degrees cooler today than yesterday, high near 54 in Lubbock today. Some highs in the 40s will be mixed in northwest of the city.RAIN?: We've had a few sprinkles early this morning and we can't rule out a few more through today. We just don't have the support for meaningful rainfall here. A line of thunderstorms has developed just east of our area as of 5 a.m. A tornado watch was posted in the 5 a.m. hour for much of Oklahoma. The severe weather risk increases as this line of storms moves farther east. The primary threat is straight-line wind, though some tornadoes are possible. The standard risk for severe storms is shown in yellow below, with the enhanced, moderate risk in red: PANHANDLE SNOW: There is cold air behind this storm system. We expect some light blowing snow north of our area over the Texas Panhandle, including Amarillo, late afternoon into this evening. The ground is warm and the temp will be above freezing, so no major issues are expected. There could even be some isolated flurries or a light snow shower into our northwestern area, including Farwell, Dimmitt, Muleshoe and Nazareth. With this powerful system we'll just have to watch how far south the flurries will move. Don't expect any accumulations.REST OF THE WEEK: It'll be a little breezy tomorrow morning, with the wind dropping off into the afternoon. Tomorrow's high will be in the upper 40s to low 50s, sunny. It'll warm day by day for the rest of the week...60s Thursday through Sunday. A weak front will work to drop the temp slightly Friday, but we'll likely still see the low 60s.The weather map is pretty quiet this week. We'll have to watch what the next upper-level disturbance will do by early next week. It's too early to know if it'll bring more wind or rain. Have a great day. Rudy will have the next forecast update here later this afternoon.-Matt

Connect with me on Facebook and Twitter. It was another nice and warm day for most of us today although a cold front kept our northeastern most counties much cooler than the rest of us. Below is a look at some of our morning lows and afternoon highs from today. Clouds will increase tonight leading to slightly milder temperatures tomorrow morning although we will still be cold starting off in the mid 30s. The front that is currently positioned across our northeastern counties will make another push to the southwest and clear the region tomorrow leading to cooler temperatures although it still looks like we will warm to above the average high of 55°.Clouds will continue to increase on Saturday as moisture pools across the region leading to a slight chance for some storms. Several models show some rain and storms forming early Saturday afternoon while others still keep any activity to late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Either way it looks like any storms we see will be weak and rainfall amounts will be meager at best. Below is a graphic produced by the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center showing that total rainfall over the weekend will be less than a tenth of an inch area wide. Clouds will quickly clear on Sunday and we will hold mostly sunny conditions into the middle of next week. It looks like we will see breezy to windy conditions during the first half of next week but models still differ quite a bit on the overall wind setup so that could still change as we get closer. Our next cold front will then move through during the middle of next week cooling us down to below average temperatures to end out the week. It does not look like we will see any precipitation with that system. I hope you had a great day! Join us tonight on the News at Nine for the latest News, Weather and Sports. Matt will have the next forecast update tomorrow morning.-Rudy

Connect with me on Facebook, Twitter and Google+MORE WARMTH: A nice spring preview continues today. We hit 68 in Lubbock yesterday, with several other locations across the area in the upper 60s. It'll turn a little warmer today. Beneath a sunny sky it'll top out near 74 in Lubbock today, wind breezy W/SW 10-20mph. Here are the projected high temps for the area: It'll cool to near 31 tomorrow morning, then a cold front makes for a tricky forecast. We should see a pretty good range in temperature tomorrow afternoon...50s around Childress, Turkey, Paducah and maybe as far south as Floyd County. Lubbock should make the mid 60s with mid 70s across the SW South Plains and SE New Mexico, maybe upper 70s near Hobbs. These setups are always tough to forecast, and we're going to be wrong somewhere on the temperature. Models often don't grasp how far the front will move. The SW flow ahead of the front will try to keep warm air in parts of our area. If that front doesn't move in until later in the day Lubbock could very well hit the mid 70s.WEEKEND: That front works across the area late tomorrow into Friday, setting up a couple of cooler days, both Friday and Saturday in the 50s. It'll turn warmer again beginning Sunday. An upper-level storm system moving in from the west will increase the clouds on Saturday. Late Saturday into Sunday there is a slight chance for rain. It doesn't look like this is a setup for the soaking rain we need, just the chance for a few spotty showers that won't produce good rain totals.Next week starts mild, high temp in the 60s. The second half of the week should turn cooler. It doesn't look like it'll be a repeat of 70s like this week. Enjoy your day. Rudy will have the next forecast update later this afternoon.-Matt

Rhino Charge by Mudflap KLLL,posted Jan 21 2013 2:48PM
Note to self: Next time someone urges you to "stand a little closer" to a rhinoceros, don't.
From this story on cbsnews.com When do you not listen to the African wildlife expert? When he tells you to stand closer to the rhino. That suggestion by a South African game park owner resulted in serious injuries to a 24-year-old woman from Johannesburg. The Beeld newspaper reported Tuesday that Chantal Beyer said the game park owner snapped pictures and suggested that she "stand just a little bit closer" seconds before the attack. Photos show Beyer and her husband only feet away from two rhinos.
According to the story, just after the photo got snapped, apparently, so did the rhino, which suddenly charged the couple. The wife was gored and suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs. Bad deal for them, to be sure, but do you think they placed a little too much trust in their guide? Would you take a chance like that?

Connect with me on Facebook, Twitter and Google+RAINY DAY: First, I know what you're wondering...where's the rain? The powerful storm system continues to trend slower. But don't worry, the rain is on the way. A few days ago it looked like rain would start yesterday afternoon...then it was early this morning...now most models are locked on rain starting this afternoon.Early this morning rain is widespread from the mountains of Southwest Texas up to the Red River near Sherman and down to Beaumont, with the heaviest storms near San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The upper-level storm system is in northern Mexico, moving northeast. It's cloudy and humid this morning on the South Plains and it'll stay that way through today.Rain will begin for our southern communities, from Hobbs to Snyder, first. We may see a few showers in this area through the morning. Through the afternoon rain will expand from southeast to northwest across the area, at times with some heavy downpours and possibly a few thunderstorms. Rain should cover all of the area at some point today, with showers fading around morning commute tomorrow, possibly a few linger showers through late tomorrow morning. Most of the guidance we review suggest the heaviest and most widespread rain will fall today between 6 p.m. and Midnight.SNOW: It still looks like this is mainly rain for Lubbock with possibly some snow mixed in or a transition to all snow near the state line later tonight. If that changeover does occur it could be a few inches of wet snow on top of the rain. This is mainly for the higher terrain of the western and northwestern South Plains.HOW MUCH?: The forecast for rain totals is still on track, roughly 1/2" to 1" of rain for most locations. The northwestern South Plains will likely receive less with the greatest totals east and southeast of Lubbock. Here is one of our in-house models, showing widespread 1/2" totals...this model suggest upwards of 2" off of the Caprock. That may be a little high, but a good sign. REST OF THE WEEK: The rain will taper off through tomorrow morning. A southwest breeze will warm it to the low 50s. 60s make a brief return Friday with a gusty SW/W wind. The latest guidance is suggesting it may turn quite windy by Friday afternoon.MUCH COLDER: A strong cold front arrives Saturday, which will set up a prolonged cold pattern next week. It'll likely reach the 40s Saturday with a few clouds, then a colder setup with more clouds Sunday. There could be a passing disturbance some time early next week, but nothing promising for snow at this point. What is likely is the western and central United States will be in a cold pattern next week. Check back here for updates through the day. Rudy will have a complete forecast update later this afternoon.-Matt

With the holiday season behind us and all those "Best of 2012" lists thankfully over with, let's turn our attention to new music coming down the pike in early 2013.
Connect with me on Facebook and Twitter! This weekend was very pleasant with abundant sunshine and temperatures near 50 for much of the area. The upper level ridge that brought us these lovely conditions has already moved east and our focus turns to the low pressure system maturing to our west over Southern California.Clouds will be on the increase Monday throughout the day. We'll start in the mid 20s with a high in the low 50s and a south southwesterly wind around 10 to 15 mph. The increasing clouds are all due to that low pressure system moving closer. It will bring in warm air in Tuesday morning giving us a mild morning, but as it passes, cool air will be brought into the area behind it, keeping our afternoon high temperature in the mid 40s.RAIN CHANCESAs the system works it's way through the South Plains, chances for rain start for our southern counties Tuesday mid morning. As it travels northward the rest of the area will get rain as well. Because this system is heavy with moisture and a closed off low, it will be tracking rather slowly which means this rain event is going to last.Wednesday is when the entire area has the best chances to see this rainfall and the heaviest rain as well. Cool air will continue to be pulled into the area by the low pressure so it will likely be breezy with a high only in the low 40s. But because of the moisture on the ground, the morning will be on the mild side in the mid 30s.As of right now rain totals will likely be between a half inch to a little over an inch, with the most being the further south and east you are. SNOW CHANCESWe are confident in this precipitation event remaining mostly rain for Lubbock through Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures in the low to mid 40s for Tuesday and Wednesday and mild mornings above freezing are in store. Our best chance for snow will be mainly for our northern counties on Thursday morning as the system is exiting the area. That is when we could see a wintery mix or now because we'll dip closer to the freezing mark.Thursday afternoon will bring another slight warm up and a clearing trend once that system is gone and the trend will continue into Friday with the possibility for us to reach the 60s in Lubbock and mostly sunny skies. Another system arrives sometime on Friday night which will drop our temperatures significantly for the weekend. As this is far away, we are not too confident on how cold it will get, but we will watch it's strength and timing as it gets nearer.Watch the News at Nine tonight in HD!I hope you had a great weekend! Matt will have the updated forecast and Weather Blog in the morning!-Caitlin
