Finally, a map to show why you don't go to Corpus every weekend.

by JR posted Apr 7 2014 4:21PM
Finally, you have something to show your out of state relatives, who ask if why you don't visit your distant cousin in Corpus Christi more often..."I mean, how far away is it really?" Well facts are fact, that annoying aunt may actually be closer to your cousin than you are.

Texas is 790 miles long. The red on this map represents the area that is within 790 miles of Texas. That is to say, if you are within this red zone, you are closer to somewhere in Texas than other parts of Texas are…

Looking for a few more,

Beaumont is closer to Tampa than El Paso.

Brownsville is closer to Mexico City than DFW.

Texarkana is closer to Atlanta than El Paso.

Corpus is closer to Cuba than Denver.

Austin is closer to New Orleans than El Paso

Downtown Fort Worth to downtown Dallas is longer than the Gaza Strip is long, longer than the english channel.

Dallas to Houston is nearly the same distance as Paris to London.

Yeah, my husband's company in New Jersey never could understand why he couldn't just run to Houston from Levelland and back in a day. New Jersey would fit on one of our counties.
04/08/2014 8:20AM
So what your saying have a lot of worthless land?
04/08/2014 10:40AM
texas is big
El Paso is closer to the Pacific Ocean than Austin
04/08/2014 12:41PM
Actually Beaumont is closer to El Paso. I live in a town near by and from my town to Tampa is 910 miles. To El Paso it is 842 miles.
04/08/2014 4:20PM
Finally a map to
Yeah but none of those places are Texas!
04/08/2014 5:59PM
Name of city
Please don't call it 'Corpus'..... No one calls New Braunfels 'New' or San Antonio 'San'....just sayin
04/08/2014 7:06PM
now do this with Alaska...
04/08/2014 9:14PM
Overlay it
If you overlay Texas over the Eastern USA...put East Texas--Sabine River on Boston you know where El Paso is? Indianapolis!
04/08/2014 9:50PM
whoever wrote this has an 8th grade education
04/08/2014 9:56PM
Or maybe a Tech education. Either way they have no ability with grammar or sentence structure. Tech, the 13th grade.
04/09/2014 1:39AM
In Texarkana, Chicago is closer than El Paso
04/09/2014 2:30AM
Corpus Christi
But why would you even want to go to Corpus Christi?
04/09/2014 3:47AM
El Paso to Dallas
El Paso is closer to California than it is to Dallas
04/09/2014 6:28AM
Texas. A whole other country
Simply Amazing !
04/09/2014 6:55AM
You're wrong
04/09/2014 8:07AM
Bexar County
And don't forget that San Antonio is bigger than Rhode Island.
04/09/2014 8:08AM
So that's the reason.
I always thought it was the complete and utter lack of anything fun to do due to the abysmal lack of vision and foresight as well as horrendous decision making. Turns out it's the distance. Huh.
04/09/2014 8:33AM
one more...
Going from NYC to Savannah GA!!
04/09/2014 9:57AM
Duh. Atlanta to Texarkana is only 25 miles.
04/09/2014 10:10AM
not accurate
This map is not accurate. It covers almost the entire US, which would be closer to 1,500 miles in radius than 800. Texas is big enough. We don't need to lie about how big it is.
04/09/2014 10:54AM
El Paso to Houston = 832 miles El Paso to Los Angeles = 750 Miles
04/09/2014 11:07AM
Thank you
As a former Hoosier from Indiana and a current Texan, I really need this map to show to my former friends and classmates.
04/09/2014 1:06PM
Secede Already!
When will Texas get with the program and secede already?!
04/09/2014 1:08PM
Not exactly...
There's a fairly significant problem with this map...Texas is not a circle, and as such it is not 790 miles across from every edge starting point (even if you took the longest possible distance from each edge starting point.) I must admit, though, an accurate map of this sort would be quite pleasant to have.
04/09/2014 1:26PM
so true
well put. just because it's the same state doesn't mean it isn't going to cost me $200 in gas to drive there...!
04/09/2014 3:09PM
This is pretty wrong. Beaumont is an hr closer to el Paso and driving to corpus is closer from any point in Texas than it is to Minneapolis .
04/09/2014 4:44PM
Puerto Rico
You can take a direct flight to Puerto Rico in the amount of time it would take to drive from Houston to Enchanted Rock.
04/09/2014 5:17PM
More fun with distances
You can fit France, INSIDE of Texas. The distance from El Paso to Texarcana is farther than Chicago to New York City.
04/09/2014 5:44PM
As the crow flies
Really Baja California and the Yucatan don't belong on there, practically speaking, but yeah it's still pretty crazy. Driving out from Austin to California about 40% of the trip is spent just leaving Texas.
04/09/2014 5:50PM
we have everything
why leave Texas when we have everything you could want?
04/09/2014 5:58PM
And Amarillo is closer to five other state capitols than its own. Santa Fe, Denver, Topeka, Little Rock, and Oklahoma City are all closer to Amarillo than Austin.
04/09/2014 6:49PM
Kek Snapchat
So, you have your Snapchat on here... time to send di ck pics
04/09/2014 7:10PM
El Paso
Nothing is close to El Paso.
04/09/2014 7:40PM
Rio grande Valley to Dallas/Fort Worth
Driving from the Rio Grande Valley to DFW will take all day. We left at 7am & arrived at dinner time. A whole day was gone & we hadn't even gotten out of Texas yet.
04/09/2014 7:53PM
or you could just admit that corpus christi is a piece of $hit beach? sorry, didn't know you were a bunch of prudes.
04/09/2014 9:26PM
ATTN EU Football Fans
This is why your traveling support is so much better! You think going to Paris from London is a big deal? closest rivals are that far :D.
04/09/2014 10:20PM
But who cares?
"If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent Texas and live in Hell" General Philip Sheridan
04/09/2014 10:45PM
uh no
Except you're wrong on most of these.
04/09/2014 11:06PM
Road mileage sign
There use to be a road mileage sign in Texarkana (upper right corner) that said it was closer to Chicago (792 miles) than to El Paso (802 miles). But according to your map, it could have said Milwaukee. We lived in Texas for 9 years and never drove further West than the LBJ ranch from where we lived along I-35 which roughly separates the populated part of Texas East of that interstate from the unpopulated part to the West. I estimate that the unpopulated part accounts for about 60-65% of the total land area.
04/09/2014 11:23PM

Houston is closer to Tallahassee than El Paso
04/09/2014 11:46PM
My Grandpa used to say "the sun did rise and the sun did rest, and I ain't been out of. Texas yet!
04/10/2014 12:21AM
Why was this written in the first place?
This is an article about a problem nobody has.
04/10/2014 8:00AM
another one
Taking the southerner route from Dallas to L.A., by the time you get to El Paso, you are halfway there.
04/10/2014 9:30AM
True, but...
That must be "straight line" miles because driving miles from the northwest corner of the Panhandle to the beach east of Harlingen is closer to 900 miles than the 790 miles stated here.
04/10/2014 9:44AM
El Paso is closer to Californian than it is to Houston.
04/10/2014 10:22AM
Not accurate
They are taking the single longest dimension of Texas and acting like all points on the border of Texas are 790 miles away from somewhere else in Texas. It is only the east-west dimension that is 790 miles long. For instance, the border north of Wichita Falls is less than 600 miles away from closer the furthest spot in Texas (near Brownsville).
04/10/2014 11:04AM
Texas "Geography"
Many states could pull of this impressive results. Even Oklahoma, which is some 630 miles long given this sort of logic, would look massive. Even Kansas wouldn't look bad. California would probably trump Texas handily, and of course Florida would be right in there. But these states don't go in for these sorts of geographical ego display. No. only Texas regularly feels the need to strut and crow. This map says a lot, but about something quite different than the its creator intended. Nice work.
04/10/2014 11:37AM
I love maps like this, would like to see the UK inserted into a map to see what it looks like
04/10/2014 12:21PM
Awesome! Let's go!
and I BET,Belize!! is closer to Houston....than San Antonio is to Orlando! Was only about a 2 hr flight from Houston to BELIZE !! Over3 hours flight from here to Orlando!
04/10/2014 2:38PM
so true
lived in texas all my true
04/10/2014 2:45PM
Conservative Values
I'm not certain where they get the figure '791 miles': El Paso, TX to Orange, TX is 854 miles. And Brownsville, TX to Texline, TX is 899 miles.
04/10/2014 6:05PM
Corpus to Denver?
Where in Texas is Denver?
04/10/2014 6:38PM
El Paso is closer to the Atlantic Ocean than it is to the Gulf of Mexico.
04/10/2014 7:05PM
"It is approximately 950 miles from Texline, Tx to Brownsville, Tx."
04/10/2014 8:45PM
yes Sir
Drive to Southern California ince in a while from San Antonio..When I hit El Paso..I know i am on the down hill side of the trip
04/10/2014 11:37PM
It's a long way to El Paso
Texarkana is closer to Chicago than El Paso.
04/10/2014 11:41PM
Go Texas
Been telling ppl these facts for years! Nice to see it recognized
04/11/2014 10:48AM
Meh, I lived in San Antonio for nearly 40 years and I call Corpus Christi "Corpus" all the time. Unless there are other cities that start with the name "Corpus," there's very little possibility of ambiguity. That's notso San Antonio and New Braunfels.
04/11/2014 11:11AM
Corpus is right. I grew up in Texas and still live here. Half of the time people just call it Corpus.
04/11/2014 1:46PM
Nothing wrong with "Body"
The name Corpus Christi means "body of Christ" so it is a bit different than calling New Braunfels, "New". By saying "Corpus" you're saying "body". So lets all go to Body this weekend. I'll put off going to Christ for a few more years.
04/11/2014 2:54PM
Yeah, who needs dumb old Texas?
04/11/2014 9:45PM
Bigger in Texas
DFW airport is bigger then Manhatten New York.
04/12/2014 1:14AM
Houston to El Paso
Houston to El Paso is is not no 832 miles it's like 720 miles give or take a few
04/12/2014 5:17AM
patric, just About 15 million more people than the ones who need where you live
04/12/2014 5:26AM
I would say that 90% of the people call Corpus Christi, just plain Corpus. The reason is because we are that familiar with the area, it has nothing to do with a translation meaning body and no one in Texas is if a mental shortcoming to say "lets goto body", that would be like saying "let's go to the Pass" instead of saying "lets go to El Paso".
04/12/2014 5:41AM
My I ask why are some of you non Texans so disgruntled with our State of Texas, we do not belittle you and what we say about Texas is close enough to a complete truth that the variance should not bother anyone. A posting above said that we have everything in Texas and that is pretty close to a 100% truth. We have an interesting piece of our country , the USA and we love it but so do 20 million people who visit Texas every year. Now do start bombing me on that 20 million visitor bit,.... I did not do the counting, it was some group up in or near the capital, but anyway the number is pretty big and we welcome people to visit us or to follow the thousands who move to Texas every year . We do not have a lot of WASTE SPACE like some one said on a posting above,... he is probably upset about the place where he lives and just wants to vent, but we do have plenty of space. Every square foot of Texas is owned by somebody but there is still plenty of space for sale , welcome to Texas , if you do not like it you can always go back.
04/12/2014 6:45PM
30 Years of Corpus Christi TX.
I was borned in Corpus Christi Texas 1958,Left there In 1988 And have never looked Back or been happier being Away from Corpus Chriri.
04/12/2014 7:15PM
Did You know?
just an fyi and you can ck it out...The ENTIRE Population of the world will fit in TEXAS and still have room left over...TRUE!
04/12/2014 8:12PM
not driving distance!
This is a straight line distance map, not road mileage.
04/13/2014 3:34PM
This map is not inaccuarate, "That is to say, if you are within this red zone, you are closer to somewhere in Texas than other parts of Texas are…" I would explain this further, but it's pretty self explanitory, perhaps those who complained should read more carefully. I can only assume the people who are complaining are pretentious yankee's who troll anything Texas to talk smack(trying not to curse but you know what I meant there, also add a few explitives after yankee's).
04/15/2014 10:53AM
It's a long drive!
Crescent City, CA to San Diego, CA is about the same distance as El Paso, TX to Texarkana, TX or Brownsville, TX to Perryton, TX. The length of CA is close to the same as the length and width of TX.
04/24/2014 8:51AM
TX is BIG!!
Every Texan is taught that Texas is the biggest and the best!!
04/25/2014 5:27PM
But Alaska cut in half is still bigger (and better) than Texas
05/20/2014 10:53AM
The city of Houston...
... I believe Houston metropolitan area is larger than RI, MA, & CT combined.
05/20/2014 10:56AM
The city of Houston is both 832 miles (from the east side), and 720 miles(from the west side) from El Paso
06/14/2014 9:40AM
Name of city person...
Don't call it Corpus? You must not be born and raised here because otherwise you would know those of us that are call it Corpus. We don't bother saying Corpus Christi because we assume by saying Corpus most people know what we are talking about.
08/25/2014 5:38PM
keep texas beautiful....put a yankee on the bus
08/25/2014 5:41PM
oh by the way ...denver is on the county line of gaines county and yoakum county ....we got it
10/31/2014 10:04AM
Texas is huge
El Paso is farther west than Denver. Perryton is farther north than Tulsa, Las Vegas and Nashville.
11/07/2014 7:10PM
These comments make me moister than a freshly baked lava cake next to a 20-something squirter.
11/12/2014 11:59PM
From SA
To he person who said, "please dont call it Corpus" Im a Texan, born and raised, we (family & friends) have ALWAYS called it "Corpus" the other examples you used were just dumb.. Port Aransas is Port A, see how that works.. you could Never cut New Braunfels to New, but... San Antonio could be S.A.
11/13/2014 10:50AM
As the Crow flies
These are straight line distances, not road distances.
11/13/2014 1:33PM
Big Tex
I like the comment that "San Antonio is bigger than Rhode Island." Everything is bigger than R.I. It's only 37 miles across. The DFW Metroplex is larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. And, DFW airport could encompass all of Manhattan! That's a fact that's in the Bob Bullock Texas state history museum in Austin. :)
11/13/2014 3:13PM
11/13/2014 5:24PM
Ya the drive from Texarkana to El Past is grueling!! 😠
11/13/2014 10:26PM
11/14/2014 8:24AM
Texas is Big
This is a helpful guide
11/14/2014 8:37AM
Mr. Texmust
Texans, much like the French, don't really care too much for yankees. In the 60s there was some political discussion here concerning "immigration" from Mexico. The saying was, "Y'all are wantin' to build that wall on the wrong river." Some things never change.
11/14/2014 8:42AM
Corpus, Corpus, Corpus
The place to live if you DON'T WANT relatives visiting!
11/14/2014 10:20AM
The driving distance from Dallas to El Paso is 631 miles. It is roughly the same driving distance as Atlanta to Washington, D.C.
11/14/2014 11:17AM
People from Corpus Christi call their city CORPUS!! You must be a newbie!
11/14/2014 1:09PM
Flight time from Lubbock to El Paso is -10 minutes. You will land 10 minutes before you take off.
11/14/2014 1:15PM
CC Every Weekend!!
But I do go to Corpus almost every weekend. It's worth a 4 hour drive, and most of the roads are 75 mph so you can haul.
11/14/2014 2:16PM
if you don't like corpus. Don't visit. There are bad things about every city. Corpus is not the best but it has a lot to offer. Corpus is Texas is everyway. We got Cowboys and ranches, plus some of the best SALT water fishing in the world.Plus our beach culture. Where else can you get that?
11/14/2014 4:05PM
I love Texas! Best country in North America.
11/14/2014 4:54PM
From where we live it takes a minimum five hours to get out of Texas, to cross a state line. That's the closest state line. Ten hours to reach El Paso. Eight hours to DFW and you still have a couple hours past that to leave the state of Texas. It is what it is.
11/14/2014 5:32PM
I was born in San Diego, CA (U.S. Navy Brat)and lived there for a total of 4 weeks before being raised in Corpus Christi. My mother was a Corpus Native and (trapped) met my Mt. Rest, SC Hillbilly Father while he was stationed at NAS Corpus Christi. I have been told by people in South Carolina that I had a yankee accent and I tell them that I was born in Southern California, raised in South Texas, and my roots are from South Carolina...there ain't nuthin yankee about those facts. Whoa Dude Surf's Up!!! I consider myself a South Texas Rebel soooo ... Yippee Ky Yea and Hell Yeah, Go Cowboys Go, Hook'em Horns, Clemson Tigers Sic'em, Catch A Buzz and a Wave!!!
11/14/2014 5:48PM
I am very proud of my TEXAS HERITAGE, SCOTT-IRISH-CHEROKEE-TEJANO ... I cannot for the life of me keep from wondering about all the HATERS that live and work in this GREAT STATE. If you do not like TEXAS, its people, its land, its sports teams ... GO HOME!!! YOU LEAVING MY STATE WILL NOT HURT MY FEELINGS AT ALL!!! If you need gas money and moving expenses JUST ASK!!! We'll all pitch in, that what we do!!!
11/14/2014 6:49PM
El Paso to Huxley tx is 856 miles
From El Paso to Huxley Texas it is 856 miles and follet Texas to McAllen Texas is 806 miles that will tell you how big Texas is from point to point your welcome
11/14/2014 7:03PM
Amarillo By Morning
Amarillo is closer to the capital of five states (Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas) than it is to Austin, the capital of Texas
11/14/2014 9:03PM
Name clarification
If you live somewhere in  Texas, and especially if you were born and raised here, you know Texans respect and support other Texans; and will have the respect to call the city by its proper name: Corpus Christi. Don't give people a hard time for having respect for our community. Great things are happening down here and we would love for you to come for a visit!
11/14/2014 10:15PM
Its Corpus - Get Over it
Its Corpus, always been Corpus, always will be Corpus. The only thing people use the full Corpus Christi name is for Corpus Christi Bay. Stop fighting and embrace it. Its Chevy to Chevrolet. GM tried to keep employees from saying Chevy but eventually they gave up because that's what their customers called it.
11/14/2014 10:19PM
New England Transplant
Living here for 10 yrs... Out of state license plates are so uncommon! Previous facts are amazing.. Can't grasp how vast this state of Texas is!.
11/14/2014 10:21PM
Texas is VAST
I traveled across Texas in 1974 by Greyhound Bus and it took 24 hours to cross it going west on highway 20 along the width of the State. I have a lot of friends and some relatives who live there, so don't mess with Texas.
11/14/2014 10:32PM
Big in Big
We live in the biggest county in the biggest state in the lower 48. A county that is 6,193 sq. miles big, 5 times bigger than the state of Connecticut yet we only have 9200 people living here. CORPUS is a 500 mile drive from here.
11/14/2014 10:35PM
Citizen of Texas
I like Corpus! Yes it takes sometime to get there but it's a beautiful city! The people are not very friendly but I still love to visit. I have relatives there I I love seeing all of them when I enter the city!
11/14/2014 10:47PM
Texas was once a republic and joined the U.S. by treaty, not by purchase or anexation. And may someday be its own republic again.
11/14/2014 10:47PM
who cares
Why do Texans feel such an insane need to convince everyone how great Texas is? Sounds rather insecure. Oh, yeah, I'd love to live in a wasteland where even turning on the tap makes your entire house smell like sulfur. As if flouride wasnt bad enough, now showering makes me feel even dirtier. Corpus? Most backwards town Ive ever been to. The middle class practically doesnt exist. You're either rich, homeless (or impoverished), still live with your parents, or you're a college student. And what do imaginary borders have to do with anything anyway. Last time I checked, this planet was round
11/14/2014 10:53PM
If you've traveled the same distance from EL Paso to Beaumont, in Europe or the Middle East, you would actually have to speak 4-5 different languages !!
11/15/2014 12:10AM
Proud Not to be a Texan
As a victim of circumstance I reside on North Padre Island.. Being a homeowner slowly being taxed out. Do I really care? NO. Texas is a disgusting state and Corpus is the stinky armpit! The people hear seem proud to be the fatest city in America...who needs 4 Mexican restaurants on a tiny island. Disgusting. Proud to be a Native Californian.
11/15/2014 7:35AM
lol we do call it corpus
Whomever said don't call it corpus is dumb. We do call it corpus here in Texas.
11/15/2014 8:28AM
Native Texan and very proud of it
So not proud....go on back to S Cali. I'll pick up your place for a nickel and use it as a summer beach house.
11/15/2014 8:47AM
What idiot doesn't call it corpus? I live here and I do...
11/15/2014 9:14AM
I agree. I have lived in Texas all of my 45 years, and it is regularly referred to as Corpus. And "Who Cares" can go f yourself. We don't want you here. Next time you get a moment, check the economic rankings of all 50 states. Texas is very near the top of every study you'll see.
11/15/2014 9:15AM
Can't take Texas outta the girl
Yeah I'm from Texas and live in Kentucky. It's 918 miles from Kentucky to Houston Texas. This map is not accurate.
11/15/2014 9:27AM
Can't take Texas outta the girl
A Californian calling Texas disgusting? Now there's a good laugh for ya! California has become a total nightmare. It is the single worst state in which to do business, taxes were recently raised even higher, unemployment is 20% higher than the national average and the state government is drowning in debt. Meanwhile poverty, gang activity and crime (talk about disgusting) get higher each year. AND.. Thanks to your Proposition 30 California now boasts the highest state income tax in the nation. Yeah... If you like it so much better go on back there.
11/15/2014 10:13AM
I'm from Texas, will never leave. Scree the lot of you who are not. If you want to visit, leave your left wing ideals at home, as they do not fly here. Been all around our great nation, but no place compairs to Texas. Our ladies are hotter, we carry guns, we live like our founding fathers wanted us to live. God Bless Texas.
11/15/2014 11:00AM
Alaska is bigger by a long shot. But who cares?
11/15/2014 11:30AM
To that idiot Patrick that says who needs Texas I'll bet you use a ton of products from Texas & when you go to work if you work try a horse or bicycle cause I'm pretty sure you are using something from Texas Texas ought to secede
11/15/2014 11:33AM
Wes you are sure right I've got cousins & kinfolk that are STONE COLD FOXES
11/15/2014 11:51AM
I'm not a mathematician or a certified map maker..... but if you went 791 miles from all pointsTexas border wouldn't the red area be the same shape as Texas but larger ????
11/15/2014 12:16PM
Time zones
Texas is so big it has 2 time zones : central and mountain :) I just found that out last summer when my daughter and I took a scenic drive from Corpus Christi to California :)
11/15/2014 12:54PM
Totally correct: Corpus is called Corpus by those who are native Corpus Christians. For those who are new to the city, from Yankee country, or just generally blinded by political correctness, we respectfully call it Corpus. If we have to say Corpus Christi, that would be because someone is a foreigner and has no clue about being a Corpus native. Wanna sound like a newbie or an outsider? Call it Corpus Christi...we'll giggle about it, knowing you're secretly envious of those of us who are really from there!
11/15/2014 12:57PM
Just to be clear... We do call it "Corpus" but no one actually wants to go there.
11/15/2014 2:47PM
it takes two solid days of driving to drive across Alaska. Two and a half states of Texas fits in Alaska
11/15/2014 2:48PM
Alaska is so big it is its own time zone
11/15/2014 3:33PM
It's Corpus Christi (it means the body of Christ) And if you say you live here and it's just "Corpus" you're simply being lazy. Just because it's a common slang doesn't means it's right. Take pride in your community and be a part of the solution; not the problem.
11/15/2014 4:11PM
I've lived in Texas almost all of my 72 years and still wonder why.
11/15/2014 5:29PM
H- town
If you don't know why you live on Texas, it means you aren't getting out of your house and enjoying it. The best part of Texas, or at least Houston, is the people. If you get out and explore you'll discover how wonderful most of the people are.
11/15/2014 5:55PM
It IS Corpus!
Name...people from Los Angeles don't call it Los Angeles. They call it L.A. it's the same thing! Get over yourself.
11/15/2014 6:21PM
Why I don't go to Corpus every weekend
Reasons I don't go to Corpus every weekend: 1. It smells like egg farts.
11/15/2014 7:37PM
Texas seceding
Texas cannot secede from the union legally. It is in the state constitution.
11/15/2014 8:06PM
Texas speaks for itself
You can seem many of the comments from the "true texans". That alone is enough reason to stay away. "I can carry a gun". Wow, what else could anyone want in life? I mean, highest uninsured, highest teen pregnancy, bottom 10 (5?) in education, not enough water, not enough roads, and they still fight to keep evolution out of the textbooks. No place prides themselves on ignorance like Texas. Can't wait to leave. Won't be missed, won't care.
11/15/2014 8:43PM
7th generation Texan
Yes, Texas is big. It sucks to drive across it. I live in DFW, I never travel east, because the deep south is inbred, but I drive west often and yes, half the trip is Texas. Alaska, you are big too, nobody forgot about you up there, stop having a cow! I don't shoot own or list for a gun. I did not go to a tech school. I am the one democrat in this entire state, and we have always called it Corpus. Just like the better beach across the bay is Port A. You know a snowbird when they say full names of cities.
11/15/2014 10:33PM
I like to call it Puercos Tristes.
11/16/2014 12:05AM
Lay off of Patrick, it's just a quote from an old episode of Spongebob Squarepants
11/16/2014 12:27AM
love it. Miss it. Wish i was there. Awesome fishing, great beach, even better weather. Locals are chill and you really can't beat the dia de Los muertos festival downtown; you won't find a bigger celebration anywhere. C-sculptures, spring breakand deep sea fishing, what else can u ask for? You won't be wearing shorts and chanclas for Christmas in Alaska that's for sure. AND IT IS CORPUS. PERIOD. Saying the full name tags u as an outsider.
11/16/2014 12:58AM

I've visited AK, yeah parts are nice in the summer, but if God thawed it all out it wouldn't be as big. I dont hear of tons if people/businesses clamoring to move to a frozen 3rd world county the USA owns...nuff saud
11/16/2014 2:48AM
yep, it's a big state
When I was a college student at Samford University in Birmingham, AL, I got a roommatefrom the Houston area who transferred from Wayland Baptist University in Levelland. When I asked him how it felt to be so far away from home now, I got my first appreciation of the size of Texas. His reply: "oh, I'm now an hour closer to home. it takes 13 hours to drive from Levelland to Houston... it's only 12 hours from Birmingham to Houston."
11/16/2014 7:11AM
We call it "Corpus"
We live here and we call our city 'Corpus' not 'Corpus Christi' Thanks
11/16/2014 7:37AM
San Anto to Ruidoso, NM
7 hrs to NM/TX border, 3 hr drive after that
11/16/2014 8:19AM
for whoever actually think that Alaska is ice and it could melt and get smaller...
Your a dumbfuck. Seriously do a bit of research, Alaska isn't made out of ice and no ice parts are mapped when they make maps, you can get special maps for that that actually show the ice. Texans always making excuses for there useless state
11/16/2014 8:21AM
Interstate 10
From New Mexico to Louisiana is only 880 miles
11/16/2014 9:38AM
and all of TX will fit in Alaska and then still have room left for to do it again
11/16/2014 10:28AM
Don't Ask
My grandma taught me "Never ask someone where they're from. If they're from Texas, they'll tell you. If they're not, don't embarrass them".
11/16/2014 11:09AM
Yep ... it's big!
I'm from Canada and lived in Texas for 7 years. You could just about fit TX in BC but there'd be some spillage.
11/16/2014 11:31AM
I am a proud Texan..I have been to alot of the other states,It's all good!.No one living in Texas needs to be reminded of how large it is.Oh , Alaska ,all true but ….half of it no Cold.
11/16/2014 1:36PM
I drive from San Antonio to El Paso at least 3 times a year to visit family. We're moving to El Paso next year because it's just too great a distance to travel all the time. Also, don't mess with Texas or Texans.
11/16/2014 1:38PM
Texan by birth right
I love seeing all the Yankee's and Democrats voicing their negative attitudes towards Texas. shows they know absolutely nothing about the state!
11/16/2014 4:45PM
What can I say
Born 62 years ago in Fort Worth, lived in Austin since 1973. Corpus Christie is "Corpus", San Antonio is "san Antone", Rick Perry is an Ag, Hookem refers to the Horns. For every Rick Perry, there is a Sarah Palin, an overweight bully in New Jersey, etc. We have our share of lousy politicians, as do many other states. We have had some great people as well. Generalizations really reveal ignorance and a mean spirit. Cheerio.
11/16/2014 5:48PM
Get real "Corpus Christi"
Be a part of the solution not the problem? You think this is one of the pivotal issues today? If it's "common" then yeah that's what most folk say. Really not a big deal - everyone in Texas calls it Corpus. When I go to church or pray at night it's not in the name of a town, it's to Jesus. Take a seat
11/16/2014 8:46PM
Get the hell outa El Paso....
11/16/2014 8:46PM
Old saying, when traveling
'The sun has ris and the sun has set and we're in Texas yet'
11/16/2014 9:45PM
I have lived in Houston, Austin, and El Paso, now in Corpus. Although I love Texas,Corpus has to be the worst city to live in. As mentioned in an earlier comment. You are either rich, poor, or a student. I moved here for a job and can't wait to leave. If you like to fish great place. There is just not a lot of things to do here. Anyone that has lived here or visited, downtown area still looks and his run down. It's been this way since the 90s. In my opinion, which it is, bad community leaders who have done nothing to grow this city by the bay.
11/16/2014 9:55PM
error correction, and still looks and is run down not his
11/16/2014 10:44PM
I love living in SETX I can drive to Biloxi and it's quicker than going to Ft. Worth. We are at the perfect apex of the Southeast and Southwest. Not to mention quietly producing all those football players on your fantasy rosters and those hall-of-fame coaches. This place may not be the most awesome in the country to look at but I think the people, food, and life in general are the best in the whole country so keep talking trash jealous fools.
11/17/2014 3:25AM
Texans DO say Corpus
actually we do call it Corpus lolol, YOU might not call it that. But many many many many Of us Texas REfer to it simply as Corpus.

Worthless land...
To whoever said "so you have a lot of worthless land" the answer is Yes, yes, we do. So there is No Need for you to come down and see it!
11/17/2014 8:29AM
Texas' Size
When I first moved to Texas, I found tan article in the Dallas Herald which I sent to my parents in Boston. Tjhey thought it was a wasn't: From the northwest most Texas city (Northline) to the southeast most city (Brownsville) is further than from New York City to Miami. From the eastern most city (Texarkana) to the western most city (El Past) is further than New York City to Chicago. All of New England could fit (comfortably) into Texas' panhandle. Texas is about the size of the country of France. And lastly - The playing area of an NFL football field is about 1 acre of land. If you moved every man, woman, child, pet..everyone from the entire country into'd only have 10 people per acre.
11/17/2014 10:14AM
Home Town
Thanks to the Map Doesn't change anything.. What ever culture influence you have brought to Corpus Christi Tx...That makes it my Home and The Culture that Enriches People Lives...The Sparkling City by the Sea....
11/17/2014 12:27PM
Actual distances
According to aeronautical sectional charts, the extreme corners of Texas are: Northwest - N36 degrees 30.11 minutes W103 degrees 02.63 minutes Southeast - N25 degrees 50.41 minutes W097 degrees 22.79 minutes 701.3 nautical miles = 806.5 statute miles West - N31 degrees 55.50 minutes W106 degrees 36.30 minutes East - N30 degrees 08.21 minutes W93 degrees 41.45 minutes 673.9 nautical miles = 775.0 statute miles ... as calculated by

To the person that said there's a lot of waisted land in Texas your freakin hilarious hahaha. There ain't nothing wasted in Texas. The USA COULD NOT SURVIVE without Texas. Its rich ranching, farming, oil, plants, refineries, manufacturing, industry of all kinds makes Texas the greatest state in the USA. We are the only state that can succeed and can raise our flag above the US flag. So stop being jealous.
11/17/2014 1:39PM
"FOR WHOEVER ACTUALLY THINK THAT ALASKA IS ICE AND IT COULD MELT AND GET SMALLER..." I really loved that posting. You call people a "dumbfuck" all the while using the word 'there' instead of 'their' and 'your' instead of 'you're'. Throw in the run-on sentences and total lack of punctuation and it is very evident as to just whom the TRUE DUMB F*CK really is. Go look in the mirror, he/she is looking back at you. Texas haters get a life and worry about your own pathetic state.

This is for the cornhole that keeps tooting Alaska's horn. At nearly 600,000 square miles compared to the 270,000 square miles of Texas, it is the 47th most populated state or the 4th LEAST populated (beating out only North Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming). With less than 3/4M people, it's got fewer people than El Paso and at least five other cities in Texas, which is the second MOST populated. Not only is Alaska 47th in population, but it's also 45th in gross income with a meager $45B a year compared to Texas' $1.5 Trillion (that's Trillion in case you missed that). In fact, the city of Houston alone pulls in over half a trillion a year. That’s 12 times Alaska’s total GDP. Yes, Texas does have a lot of "wasted" land, but we graze and raise some of the finest cattle on a lot of that land because it's not really wasted land like the hundreds of thousands of square miles wasted in Alaska. But in all fairness, Alaska is first in a few things other than just square mileage. It’s the most expensive place to buy a gallon of gas if you’re in one of the TWO cities where you can actually get it without an airlift. It’s first in the percentage of jobs that are provided by the U.S. Government at a full one third the total jobs in Alaska. It’s first in the percentage of jobs that are provided by the oil and gas industry at another full third. That’s right. 2/3 of all the working people in Alaska are either working for the U.S. Government or the oil and gas industry. That leaves the final third for things like fishing which makes up the states’ second largest source of income. And that’s not all! Alaska is also first in the nation in suicide! That’s right! More people kill themselves in Alaska, per capita, than anywhere else in the entire United States. We Texans are 40th with less than half as many per hundred thousand. Yeah, we’re proud, but we really have something to be proud about. And THAT’S the difference.

El Paso
El Paso is the largest city in New Mexico.

National Seashore
Did ya know (right outside of Corpus Christi) is the National Seashore! 65.5 miles of beach without a house or hotel on it. You can drive as far as your vehicle will take you. (It gets pretty rough the farther you go) I made 22 miles this last October! I have been on many beaches, all over the world, and that beach is rivals any I have set foot on when it is like it was Oct. 13 and 14 of this year. The gulf laid down almost flat and the water was clear and deep blue and green. The sand was powder white where it was not packed and the fish surfed in little waves between the first and second sand bar. I made it all the way to Big Shell beach and was able to see how it got it's name. I took some awesome pictures! There's just something about a coyote living in the dunes next to the beach that makes life feel wild and free. Omg. There are surely some beautiful places in this Nation and I would love to see them all! But Texas is where I was born and make my home and it affords me some serious beauty and adventure when I can't travel outside it's boundaries. 65.5 miles of beach without a house or hotel in sight!

Everyone just calm down
“But these states don't go in for these sorts of geographical ego display. No. only Texas regularly feels the need to strut and crow. This map says a lot, but about something quite different than the its creator intended.” Wow, that’s amazing that you can deduce the entire psyche of the 26 million people living in this state from a stupid poorly written article by one person, Dr. Freud. “Oh, yeah, I'd love to live in a wasteland where even turning on the tap makes your entire house smell like sulfur.” And where in Texas is that supposed to be? I’ve never had water smell like sulfur in either of the Texas cities I’ve lived in (Dallas and Houston), and as for wasteland, you’ve obviously never been here and are basing your understanding of Texas on old John Ford movies set in Texas but actually filmed in Utah. Only 8% of Texas is actually desert, Texas is second in the nation in acres of forest, and Houston gets 49.8 inches of rainfall annually – exactly the same amount as New York City (we also have more live theatre seats than any other city but New York), which is why we are at the foot of a lush pine forest. “As a victim of circumstance I reside on North Padre Island.. Being a homeowner slowly being taxed out. Do I really care? NO. Texas is a disgusting state and Corpus is the stinky armpit! The people hear seem proud to be the fatest city in America...who needs 4 Mexican restaurants on a tiny island. Disgusting. Proud to be a Native Californian.” You can’t afford to be a homeowner in Texas because of the property taxes? Yeah, why don’t you move back to California and see what you can afford there. “Alaska is bigger by a long shot. But who cares?” Hardly anyone cares, because hardly anyone lives in Alaska.
11/17/2014 5:50PM
long long trip
It is further from Amarillo to Brownsville than it is from Amarillo to the Canadian border.
11/18/2014 2:50AM
CORPUS is correct...
I'm from the Rio Grande Valley....most of us call it "the Valley"...same with Corpus Christi...most of us call it "Corpus".... And to PROUD NOT TO BE A TEXAN...go back to California. No one has you hog-tied here, do they? as forthe Mexican restaurants? lol..what a stupid comment...this is SOUTH TEXAS...and we love our Mexican food....just go away...and keep your nasty comments to yourself and take them with you...
11/18/2014 10:28AM
A more accurate map...
Actually, this would be accurate distance (by using a 300% larger Texas to measure):

If you weren't born and/or raised in Texas you will never truly understand state pride. Lol I feel sorry for yall. Also, born and raised in Corpus... and have always referred to it as simply "Corpus"... and "Corpitos" on occasion.
11/19/2014 3:14AM
Sam the Sham
Corpus Christi means Jesus' Dead Body.
11/19/2014 5:52AM
native texican.
Why is everyone hetting in such an uproar. I believe the person who wrote this was just trying to express how big Texas is. For those that say we're worthless, we can keep our oil, natural gas, seafood, beef, and thousands of other industries within our state lines and see if you're impacted. Lol. If you don't like it here, don't come here. You won't hurt our feelings. I've been to 65% of this great country and lived in 3 foreign countries and always end up back here. And if you're a Texan, it's Corpus, Port A, and San Anto. If you're a true Texan, then you know where we're talking about.
11/19/2014 2:34PM
I find it hilarious that someone from California would complain about Mexican restaurants.
