Police officers are expected to enforce the law, keep people safe and prevent crime, but oftentimes they go above and beyond the call of duty.

Austin police officer James Riley was walking his beat when he was alerted to a young child walking across an empty parking lot by himself.

The young boy told Officer Riley that he was walking to a store to buy a snack for his younger sibling. Riley was concerned about his well-being, so he gave him a ride home.

Upon meeting the boy’s family, he became aware of their financial problems and decided to help.

Riley went to to the grocery store and brought back a load of snacks for the kids and easy-to-prepare meals for the parents.

The Austin Police Department shared the story on Facebook and said, “He showed true heart with this act of kindness and is just one example of how our officers work to make Austin a safe community.”
