It’s Showtime! Golden Gloves’ State Regional Champion set for this weekend

The Optimist Club of the Boys and Girls Club of Lubbock, are partnering with Golden Gloves to bring you the 2023 State Regional Boxing Championships
Bouts are set to take place this Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Prima Vista Event Center, just north of Cagle Steaks & BBQ.
The Lubbock Warriors Boxing Club Team is an organization that is sponsored by the Lubbock Optimist Club – a club that has been a part of the Lubbock community for over 75 years – and will be fighting in this year’s championships.
The club is dedicated to “bringing the best out of kids” and has supported many clubs in the Lubbock area such as Boy Scouts, Boys Ranch and other programs which open opportunities to provide success to the youth.
In the past, the Lubbock Warriors Boxing Club has produced numerous champion boxers, such as Adam Castillo, a former member of the Lubbock Warriors and winner of the Golden Gloves regional and state title in 2014.
Edward Hernandez, a coach and representative for the Lubbock Warriors Boxing program spoke back in 2015 on how the program received its uprising, and what it means to the youth in the Lubbock community.
“They’re not seeking to be a world champion… they just want to belong to something,” said Hernandez in an interview.
The Lubbock Warriors Boxing Club started in the late 1960s by police officers as an act of crime prevention, but according to Hernandez the program is more about teaching kids self discipline and respect, rather than boxing.
The Golden Gloves of America has also been a program standing long in the history of sports in America, dating back to the first tournament held by the foundation in 1923.
The Golden Gloves program is dedicated to providing an environment and opportunity for young athletes to develop lifetime skills.
Consisting of 30 franchises, the Golden Gloves of America sponsors hundreds of programs competing in local and regional tournaments throughout the United States, as well as hosting a national tournament of champions each year.
Currently the Golden Gloves of America has advanced its program, allowing for ten different weight classes for women ranging from 106-176+ lbs, and ten different weight classes for men ranging from 108-201+ lbs.
Tickets for this year’s Texas State Regional Championship will be available at the door only. Adults and children above 11 will have to pay $20 per ticket, while children ten and under will cost $10 per ticket.
