How Prepared Are You For A Disaster?

The never ending horror of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, preceded by Hurricane Harvey, preceded by wildfires should teach us all a preparedness lesson, but no so.  In response to the question, “How prepared are you for a disaster?”, I must confess, not very much at all.  No excuse, but I have plenty of company.  In fact, in a 2016 survey by the  National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University,  two-thirds of American households lack adequate plans and supplies for a disaster.  Count me in.

When I lived in California almost on top of the massive Hayward fault line, (runs through The Bay Area parallel to the San Andreas, and is overdue for a rupture) I was very prepared with an earthquake kit.  It contained a week’s worth of ramen noodles, protein bars, dog food and most importantly, water.  The kit also contained cash, which kept disappearing.  Hmmm.  Now that I’m back in my home state of Texas, though, I am woefully ill-prepared.  I do have firewood, flashlights, candles, matches and a fire extinguisher that may or may not work.  If a disaster hits at the beginning of the week, I’ll be flush with water. Unfortunately, a disaster at the end of the week would find me almost dry, because I only refill the giant water containers every Saturday.  And as far as any type of organized plan to connect with family, friends and loved ones during a disaster..nope, not here.  This is ridiculous on my part because of tornadoes, flood possibilities (we have had them) and oh yeah, that 11 plus inch blizzard in 2015.  Time to make a change, I think.

So where do you fall in your level of preparedness?   Are you ill-prepared, somewhat prepared, or 100 per cent prepared for a disaster?  Maybe we should all take a look and make sure we have supplies and a plan.
