Red Raiders sweep season opener
LUBBOCK, Texas – Mia Wesley shined in her Texas Tech debut as she led the team with 12 kills on .303 hitting while also adding eight digs in the Red Raiders 3-0 sweep of Eastern Kentucky in the first game of the Boston College Invitational on Friday.
Emily Merrick picked up right where she left off last season, as she recorded 10 kills on an impressive .600 hitting percentage and a huge solo block in the third set.
Tech came out of the gate hot in every set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead in the first and second sets and a 9-4 lead in the third forcing early Colonel’s timeouts. Eastern Kentucky was able to scrap back into set one (25-20) and two (25-19) before being shut down in set three as Tech clinched the sweep with a 25-13 set win.
Wesley was among four players to make their debut in a Red Raider jersey including Hanna Borer, Reagan Leinen and Aliyah McDonald.
Borer had total command of the offense with 32 assists and was able to get in on four blocks. Leinen and McDonald held down the middle as Leinen finished with seven kills and McDonald with eight block assists.
Abby Dickinson led the team with 12 digs and was a perfect 14-14 on serve receptions while Maddie Correa was right behind her with 10 digs. Dickinson and fellow defensive specialist Emily Contreras recorded their first career kills as well.
Brynn Williams added five kills and two block assists to round out the major scorers for Tech.
The Red Raiders move to 4-0 all-time against Eastern Kentucky and will be back in action tonight at 6 p.m. CT to take on invitational host Boston College.
