AARP Tax Aide

AARP Tax- Aide, the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, will prepare taxes on Wednesdays and Thursdays only, beginning Thursday, February 1st until Thursday, April 11th. We are doing taxes on a first-come, first-serve basis! Please do NOT call the office at the Lubbock Adult Activity Center to set up an appointment. We urge you to check in early with all your documents. Social Security cards are required for all persons listed on the tax return. Photo IDs are required for primary persons on the return. Please bring a copy of last year’s return. Also bring all 2023 W-2s, 1099s, 1095 A, B, or C, end-of-the-year Social Security statement(s), and any other pertinent forms. Our volunteers are trained and have experience. There are some return scenarios which will be considered out-of-scope for AARP Tax-Aide. Examples are married filing separately, rental properties, and farm income. Come by if you have questions and we will be happy to assist you.

Zumba at Maxey Community Center

This class is a high-energy cardio workout perfect for anyone looking to improve their fitness and have fun at the same time. It meets from Monday through Thursday, from 6 pm to 7 pm, and has a different focus each day. Monday and Wednesday’s class is pure Zumba, incorporating Latin and international music with a mix of dance moves to keep your heart rate up and your body moving. Tuesday’s class is a bit more challenging, with the addition of light weights and toning exercises. You’ll still be dancing, but with a focus on building muscle and toning your body. Thursday’s class is Zumba Step, which incorporates a step platform to increase the intensity and add some new challenges to your routine. With a positive and supportive atmosphere, friendly instructors, and energetic classmates, this is the perfect workout class to boost your health and wellness.

This seated yoga class is specially designed for individuals ages 45 and above who are looking for a gentle yet effective workout. The class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:45 – 11:30 AM, and will focus on promoting flexibility, balance, and overall wellbeing. During the class, participants will learn various seated yoga poses that will help to stretch and strengthen their muscles, improve their posture and alignment, and alleviate stress and tension. The instructor will guide students through each pose, offering modifications and adjustments as needed, to ensure that everyone is working at their own pace and comfort level. Whether you’re new to yoga or have been practicing for years, this class is perfect for individuals of all levels and abilities. The calming atmosphere and supportive community will make it easy to connect with others and feel at ease, while the physical benefits of yoga will leave you feeling rejuvenated, relaxed, and ready to take on whatever the day may bring.

Introduction to T-Ball and Soccer, taught by Coach Ryan Wakefield, is designed for children between the ages of 3 and 6 who want to learn the fundamentals of these two popular sports. The class is designed to teach kids the basics of hitting, running, and fielding in T-ball, as well as the skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting in soccer.
Introduction to Soccer, Baseball, and Softball is a class that will teach fundamental skills and techniques in these three sports to children between the ages of 6 and 13. The class will be led by Coach Ryan Wakefield, who has extensive experience coaching and playing these sports at various levels. During the sports combo class, emphasis will be put on physical education, soccer, basketball, and t-ball. Students can look forward to several throwing and catching games as well as a variety of other skill and technique development games.

Enjoy running like a ninja? Join us for a Ninja Run through the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum March 14 at 2:00 p.m. This fun run will start at the Gazebo beside the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum Building at the south entrance near Hodges Community Center.

Following the run, visit with health and wellness organizations inside the Hodges Community Center to learn about services offered to our community!

No registration is required, waivers must be signed before running in the Arboretum. Waivers will be available upon arrival.

Join the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation department and Townsquare Media at the Easter Egg-Stravaganza on March 16, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Mae Simmons Park!

Starting at 9:00 a.m. enjoy a Spring Stroll along the Canyon Lake located south of the Mae Simmons Community Center. There will be a scavenger hunt for children ages up to 12 and vendors for everyone in the family to chat with! This will be ongoing until 3:00 p.m.

The Annual Easter Bunny Brunch will be hosted inside of the Mae Simmons Community Center and will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at playlubbock.com and cost $10/person. Get your tickets now as space is limited. Registration is required for this part of the event by March 13, 2024.

The Easter Bunny Car Hop will jump into action at 11:00 a.m. in the Mae Simmons Community Center parking lot. Visit different cars to receive prizes and grab a bite to eat from a food truck.

Easter Pups will start at 12:00 p.m. at the Tennis Courts behind the Mae Simmons Community Center. Pups are invited to participate in a dog-only egg hunt, visit with dog specific vendors and take photos with the bunny!
